Issue No 406
15th June 2007
Dear Friends of Crescent,
Mr Long, as you know, is leaving us at the end of term after three very successful and happy years. He is also getting married in July. If you would like to contribute to a present for him please send your money in to Mrs Morley.
I am pleased to announce that Mr Matthew Phillips has accepted my invitation to succeed Mr Long and hopes to attend some school events between now and the end of term. Mr Phillips comes to us highly recommended from Twycross School where, coincidentally, some of us went last term for the cross country races.
For this year’s Class V the correspondence about the 11+ tests is by-passing the schools and going directly to the parents. The tests are not being sat in schools but in local test centres on the first Saturday in October. The tests are being set by NFER rather than Moray House. In practice I don’t expect this will make a lot of difference to the end result.
Yours sincerely,
R H Marshall

Nursery News
Our topic this half-term is “Farms” and the children have been talking in Circle Time about being a farmer for a day and the jobs they would have to do.
The children made a farmer and his wife using various materials and acted and sang “The farmer’s in his den”. We played a guessing game and the children smelt and guessed what was in the various bags and what they could be used for. We have made a scarecrow from papier maché and real straw.
Thank you to Mrs Channing for giving us a selection of maize, wheat, soya and straw.
If any farmers are available to come into Nursery to talk to the children about their job please let me know.
Next week we will be talking about “Farm Animals”.
We would like to invite Emily, Toby, Isabelle, Alice, Marcus, James, Billy and Ben to join us for an induction morning on Friday, 29th June from 09.30 – 12.00. This morning session will replace the afternoon session on that day.

FOC News
‘Eyes down for a full house’
Hopefully you will have joined us for a fun afternoon out with your children at the Crescent Bingo last week. We had plenty of laughter and a few balls going astray as we got into the spirit. Thank you to the committee who provided the sandwiches, crisps, cakes, biscuits and fruit for our supper, we had quite a feast.
The committee members are now stepping up a gear for the final event of the school year, The Crescent Family BBQ. This year it will be held on Sunday, 1st July at The Old Laurentians Rugby Football Ground, Lime Tree Avenue, Rugby.
This year we have managed to secure the loan of the giant slide and a bouncy castle for the children, so dig out your cricket set for an afternoon of fun and socialising. We have a pig roast, BBQ, salads and desserts. Drinks can either be bought from the licensed bar or provided by yourselves.
Make sure you bring your picnic rugs and tables, deck chairs and parasols. Not to mention sun cream and sun hats if we are lucky enough for the sun to shine.
If you have not already done so, please check out the notice board just inside the side entrance to see if you are able to donate a raffle prize. The donations are then sorted and arranged into themed boxes that are well worth winning.
Please also support us by selling as many raffle tickets as possible. More raffle books will be available for sale in the wall containers next to the FOC notice board.
As you may have noticed this year, there has been an alteration in the ticket price. This is due to the fact that the FOC have decided to have a manned pig roast this year, as last year one of the committee had a very narrow escape when in the early hours of the morning, the burner went out, she tried to re-light it and it ‘blew back’ and singed her hair and burnt her arm.
Due to this we feel that in this day of Health and Safety we must protect ourselves. Please do not feel put off by this slight increase as we feel that the afternoon is still very good value for money and the Committee put a lot of time and effort into making sure that this event is a highlight of the school year.
