Dear Friends of Crescent,
I was pleased to receive an e-mail from the Head of English at Rugby School informing me that three of our pupils had won prizes in the Rupert Brooke Creative Writing Competition
Rebecca Rebis won first prize for her piece entitled ‘One Year in the Life of a Tree’ , Hiba Abu El Gasim second prize for ‘Mohammed’ and Freya Noyce was commended for ‘The New School’.
Our congratulations to them all.
Last Friday afternoon 20 tired but happy children and two equally tired and happy teachers arrived back from their week at Slapton Ley Environmental Field Studies Centre in Devon. As always they had thoroughly enjoyed their stay there and had had a range of exciting experiences whilst working 12 hour days even at the weekend!
The trip can only take place given the goodwill of the staff involved and it is an enormous responsibility for the teacher in charge. This year, as for the last two, it was Mrs. Lowe who led the party - and she was one of those who came back incubating a ‘bug’ leaving her feeling very poorly for a few days. I cannot speak too highly of how well she looks after the children acting both ‘in loco parentis’ and as a teacher. Many teachers, given our current climate of seeking to blame someone for every little mishap, refuse to take on such responsibility so I am all the more grateful to her as, I’m sure, are the parents of children in Class VI. Thank you very much, Mrs. Lowe, you’re a star!
What’s in a name?
Recently a television advertisement has given us the catchphrase ‘does exactly what it says on the tin’. It made me wonder about the school’s name and what it might say to people who hear it for the first time. It certainly doesn’t tell them as much about us as, for example, ‘Bilton Infants School’ says about them. Should we change our name so that it says a little more about us, to Crescent Prep or Crescent Preparatory School for instance? I would welcome any comments on this.
With best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
R. H. Marshall

Slapton 2007
Class VI have returned from Slapton for another year. Some of us struggled returning to school on the Monday due to being hit by the Slapton “lurgy”!
We had a busy, exciting, noisy time in Devon. Our tutor, Bryony, led us and taught us well. Some of the activities were pond dipping, rock pooling, badger watching, den making and lots of walking.
The children enjoyed each other’s company and even found new friends within the class. It was also lovely to see Mrs Bradley who popped along to see us on a few days.
I would like to thank Class VI for their lively company and Mr Marshall and Mr Long for their help.
Photos are available to view through a link on the website – please take a look.

Early Years Professional Status
The EYPS is a new qualification for people working with children aged 0 to 5 years. The government is hoping that at least one adult in each pre-school setting will gain this qualification over the next few years.
At Crescent we like to stay ahead of all requirements such as this – for instance we are years ahead of government targets relating to the teaching of modern foreign languages and P.E. – and so we have enabled Miss Mistry to join the first course available leading to EYPS. She has just completed the course and writes:
“As many of you know, this year I have been working towards completing the Early Years Professional Status qualification for the benefit of the school and for my own professional development.
I would just like to say a big “thank you” to all the staff at school, especially Mr Marshall, Mrs McGrellis and Mrs Rees for their help and support over the last six months.
I would also like to thank all the nursery parents and children for their patience – I have already thanked the children with a little treat.
Once again, thank you!”

Nursery News
This week we have been talking about “Farm Animals”. In Circle Time the children have talked about the needs of farm animals and how farmers look after then. We have talked about how cows are milked and where wool comes from. The children have made pig masks from paper plates, tissue and card and then used them in our role-play.
On Thursday, 28th June, we are having a Teddy Bears’ Picnic and the children are invited to bring a teddy into nursery to join us.
In preparation for Sports Day on 10th July, the children have been divided into three teams. We would be grateful if the children could wear their own team colours on the day. In the Blue team there are Belema, Rahul, George, Eloise, Emily, James, Toby and Zara – please wear a blue t-shirt. In the Yellow team are Fiona, Michael, Alya, Pia, Richard, Sebastien, Louis, Alice and Ben – please wear a yellow t-shirt. In the Red team are Emma, Alistair, Darren, Ayaka, Katie, Alex, Isabelle, Marcus and Billy – please wear a red t-shirt.
Next week: Farm vehicles, machines and tools.

FOC News
The Crescent Family BBQ.
This year it will be held on Sunday 1st July at The Old Laurentians Rugby Football Ground, Lime Tree Avenue, Rugby.
The fun starts at 12 noon and the cost is £5.00 per person.
There will be a giant slide and a bouncy castle for the children. We have a pig roast, BBQ, salads and deserts. Drinks can either be bought from the licensed bar or provided by yourselves.
Make sure you bring your picnic rugs and tables, deck chairs and parasols. Not to mention sun cream and sun hats if we are lucky enough for the sun to shine.
We have some really good raffle prizes so please try to sell as many tickets as you can, more are available to the right of the FOC notice board in the side entrance. Please remember to return your counterfoils to school and any un-sold tickets too.
There are still some spaces left to claim if you would like to donate an item for the raffle. You may also have an unwanted gift or prize that you would like to donate which would be gratefully accepted.
