 End of Summer Term  Newsletter

13th July, 2007

Dear Friends of Crescent,

In this last week of term I review the year in preparation for the Leavers’ Assembly on the last morning  – and what a year it has been!  Come to that – what a final week it has been with two Sports Days, a concert and two performances of Alice the Musical.  The first performance of Alice was greeted with a standing ovation! The exceptionally high standard of performance isn’t due just to the eleven weeks of hard work this term but rather due to years of hard work put in by Mrs Burt, Mrs Ovens and their colleagues.

Friday sees us say goodbye to Class VI and other leavers who we send on their way with our warmest wishes.  We also say goodbye to Mr Long who moves “up north” to continue in a bigger school near Preston.  He has made a huge impact on Crescent but also on junior school sport generally in Rugby; he has helped organise a lot of inter-school sport over the past two years in particular.  He will be much missed and he goes with our thanks and best wishes as he embarks not just on a new job but on married life.

With best wishes for an enjoyable summer.

Yours sincerely

R H Marshall

World War 2 Sing-a-long

Just a note to say a big thank you to all those who supported Classes III and IV by attending our performance last week.

We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and reminisced a little!  The children have loved studying a period of history in which members of their own family were involved.

Reception Class News

Both the parents and teaching staff have been very helpful whilst we have been learning about wedding traditions this term, and I would like to thank them very much.

Mrs Sutton came in one afternoon to talk to the class about weddings in Russia.  Mrs Gomez provided us with some very interesting information about weddings Mexican style and Miss Mistry gave us some beautiful photographs of a Hindu wedding which she had recently attended.  Mrs Olner was even prepared to give us her copy of a Hello magazine showing photographs of the wedding of Imran Khan!  Several parents also let us borrow photographs and momentos of their own weddings to make an interesting wedding display.

Always a favourite with the children, there were some opportunities to taste some lovely food.  Mrs Colbourne and Mrs Lerski volunteered to help the children to decorate individual tiered “wedding cakes” and Mrs Richards made a delicious and spectacular looking French wedding cake for us to share.

You help and support has been very much appreciated and has enhanced the children’s learning and enjoyment during this Topic.

Nursery News

The children have had a very busy final week of term following their lovely day out at Ash End House Farm last Friday.  They fed many of the farm animals there and then enjoyed a delicious packed lunch in a barn.

They were treated to watch Act One of “Alice” on Monday and especially enjoyed the beautiful costumes and all the singing and dancing.

Thank you all for coming to Sports Day yesterday.  We are very proud of their behaviour and performance on the day.  Well done, children!!

Finally I would like to thank you all for your help and support this year and we hope you all have a relaxing holiday.

Friends of Crescent School News

Sorry for those of you who had returned your slips and money for the BBQ.  The decision to cancel the BBQ was taken on the Wednesday before and though regrettable was vindicated by the fact that the weather forecast was right for once.  The event would have been a wash out with only 42 tickets sold at the time of cancellation compared with nearly 200 tickets sold at the same time last year.  Those who bought tickets should by now have received a refund.  Please see Jo Crompton or me if this has not happened.

The event stood to lose £600 to £700 and we cannot go ahead with events such as this without getting sufficient support in time for us to know we will at least break even.  In the end we managed to reduce our losses to a mere £50.

My thanks to all those who had put considerable time and effort into helping organise the BBQ.

Years 5 & 6 Market Day on Friday 6th July was the last remaining FOC event of the school year and raised £91.05.  Thank you to all of you who donated cakes etc. and came and supported it by buying.

As you may have been aware, we carried on with the raffle and drew the winners on Friday at Market Day, they are as follows: -

          1st Patricia Spiers. c/o Charlotte Ecclestone Class 2, 2nd G. Blinko. c/o Chloe Di Dato Class 5,

3rd Mrs Colbourne, 4th Stella Kefalas. c/o Jessica Butterworth Class 4, 5th Karen Brown. Class 4,  6th Ruth Hedderwick,             7th Paul Leonard. co Lucy Leonard Class 1,   8th Mrs Forth.

The raffle raised £452 special thanks to Denise Cook and Catherine Drew who co-ordinated, collected and packaged the prizes so beautifully.

I would like to thank all members of the Friends of the Crescent committee for their help in the last 12 months and also the kitchen, after school and cleaning staff for their prompt assistance when we have needed it most.

I’m already looking forward to the first event of the next academic year, which will be the quiz. I hope you are all taking your encyclopaedias on holiday with you in preparation! I know the teachers will be looking to maintain their unbeaten record.
