Dear Friends of Crescent,

Sporting Success

We had our first sports fixtures of the term this week – and what a start the children have made!  What has pleased me most – even more than the results – is the teamwork the children have shown right from the first whistle.  Both the netballers and footballers have passed the ball around with skill and accuracy showing a wonderfully unselfish and supportive approach.

The girls played netball against Dunchurch on Wednesday and had much the better of a 5 – 5 draw.  The goals were scored by Alison McLean (4) and Georgie Colbourne.

The boys opened their season, as they have done in recent years, at a tournament involving 16 schools at Warwick School.  We haven’t covered ourselves in glory in the past finding it hard to adapt to playing on astroturf.  This year was a different story; after drawing our first game we won our next two to top our group.  This led to a semi-final against Hallfield who have won the tournament for the past three years.  We overcame them 1 – 0 and so went on to the final which finished 0 – 0 after extra time but all agreed that we had been the better team – only the woodwork denied us the victory.  So it was on to penalties, the first stage of which also ended in a draw!  We then lost the final sudden death shoot out with our penalty rebounding from the underside of the crossbar into the goalie’s arms – so close yet so far!  A tea of sausages, chips and beans helped the boys to come to terms with their disappointment!  The goal scorers in open play were Dominic Bolton (2), Joe Miller and Daniel Marshall.

The two debutants, Oliver Howes and Jack Cornes, fitted in really well never in the least overawed even though Oliver was in goal and so had to deal with the drama of the penalty shoot out.

On Wednesday they had matches against Eastlands and Provost Williams – and we have really struggled against Eastlands in recent seasons.  Not this year!  Playing delightful football the boys won both games 2 – 0 with goals from Joe Miller, Tomas Marshall (2) and Jack Fisher.  What a start for Mr Phillips – rumour has it he has turned down an approach from Chelsea to succeed Jose Mourinho.

Speech Success

I am also pleased to report that five of our pupils took Lamda exams in Speech and Drama during the summer holiday and all did well.  The results were:

Alison McLean & Freya Noyce both passed Grade 2 Acting Duologue with Merit

April Taylour passed Speaking of Verse and Prose at Grade 1 and Isobel Pagendam at Entry Grade with Merit.

Daisy van der Post passed Verse and Prose – Reading for Performance Grade 1 with Merit.

Congratulations to them all.

Choir and Orchestra

The choir and orchestra will be taking part in our harvest festival service early next month.  Please note that their rehearsals next week will be during the school day rather than at the usual time of 3.45 p.m. so as to give them more rehearsal time and to avoid a clash with sports fixtures.  All parents will be welcome to attend the harvest festival service at 9.15 a.m. on Thursday, October 4th in the school hall.

With best wishes.

Yours sincerely,

R.H. Marshall

Box Tops for Books Scheme

As in previous years, we have decided to collect Box Tops Tokens which are to be found on the top of Nestlé cereal packets and cereal bars.  I am, therefore, hoping that we have some big “Cheerios”, “Shreddies” or “Shredded Wheat” fans in school!

If you see tokens on the top of your cereal packets, please don’t forget to tear them off and bring them into school, as we can exchange the tokens for Dorling Kindersley books.  We can order a book with as few as ten tokens and our school library has benefited very much from this in the past.

There are a number of labelled collection boxes around school.

Thank you for your support.

Nursery News

Fostering children’s speaking and listening skills is valuable in its own right and prepares the children to gain phonic knowledge and skills.

We use story, rhyme, role-play and song to fire the children’s imagination and interest.  This encourages them to use language.

We consistently praise them for effort and achievement with the aim of making their learning as rewarding as possible.

This week we are developing the children’s listening skills and awareness of sounds in the environment.

Great North Run

Janet Courtney (mum to Flora, Class V) has entered to run in the Great North Run on Sunday 30th September.  This is a half marathon event and Janet is running to help raise money for The Prostate Cancer Charity.  Janet has the relevant forms, if anyone would like to sponsor her.

Friends of the Crescent News

Firstly there has been a change to the date of the Indulgence Evening. It will now be held on Thursday 15th November.  ‘Children in Need’ will be held on the 16th and we felt it important to avoid a clash.  We already have many stallholders interested in attending so watch this space and we will keep you informed as we confirm them.

Years 3 and 4 Market Day, will be on Friday,                                                               12th October so plenty of time to get baking and sorting out those toys.

It is with much regret that I have to inform you that Stella Kench has stepped down from the committee as Vice Chairman, she was due to take over the Chair next September but is unable to continue for a variety of reasons mainly pressure of work.   I am therefore in need of a Vice-Chairman ASAP, so that I may ‘show them the ropes’ in the coming school year. It really is not as daunting a prospect as it may seem, the committee which contains a number of past Chairmen are very supportive and we all pull together. If I can do it, anyone can!

Please think long and hard and if anyone would like to talk to me about it, please leave a contact number with Mrs Morley or see me at school.

The FOC aims to put on a number of events over the school year for the benefit of all staff, parents and their children.  We currently have 7 parents and 2 members of staff regularly attending the meetings and in addition several other parents who I am always able to rely on in times of need but as in many walks of life it seems to be the same people doing the giving and the organising for the benefit of all of us. If you are able to give some time to help it will be very much appreciated.
