Issue No 415
18th October 2007
Dear Friends of Crescent,
Learning ‘times tables’ is almost as important to Maths as learning to read is to English so I am always pleased to present certificates to children who have learnt their tables thoroughly. Last Friday I was pleased to congratulate Hattie and Millie Byrne, Jayveer Grewal and Daniel Marshall on completing the Golden Challenge and Hiba Abu el Gasim, Josie Brazier and Julia Hope on completing the Diamond Challenge. Well done to them all; I look forward to presenting certificates to many other children over the months ahead.
This morning I was pleased to award Honours Certificates and Deportment Badges in recognition of the good efforts children have made over this first half term. The following children are to be congratulated on receiving these awards:
Class VI Georgina Colbourne – for her super determination to do as well as possible and Leah Pulham for her positive attitude to school and her happy demeanour.
Class V Dominic Bolton for very good effort and achievement; Francesca Brown for being polite at all times and Gregory Higginson for very good effort in maths.
Class IV Emily Cooper for working thoughtfully and carefully in all subjects and
Andres Gomez for enthusiasm and his contribution to class discussions.
Class III Luke Armstrong for always being hard working and polite and
Charlotte Ecclestone for consistently working hard, being helpful and sensible and showing improved confidence.
Class II Ellie Andrew and Jessica Cheadle for improved confidence when working independently.
Class I Edward Graham for trying very hard to make good choices and for outstanding manners and Darya Sutton for her consistency and commitment to achieve the best she is capable of.
Rec. Alistair Brown for his enthusiastic approach to school life and
Darren Ecclestone for being very polite and well mannered.
Deportment Badges
Yellow – Amar Doherty and Eloise Sutton
Red – Jessica Butterworth and Daniel Brazier
Blue – Zara Morris and Florence Chapman
You will be aware that we put considerable effort into encouraging children to read regularly and widely as no other activity benefits their general education so profoundly. We hear children in the pre-prep read almost every day and ask that they share reading at home every day too. With this in mind we plan to mark ‘Read with me’ week immediately after half term by substituting reading for homework that week. I hope parents will be able to enjoy this additional opportunity to share books with their children.
The experiment of having two Open Days this month has proved very successful. Children in Classes V and VI were all very keen to act as tour guides and those lucky enough to be asked really did themselves and the school proud. Those who missed out are anxious for us to have more such Open Days so that they can have the opportunity to show visitors round then!
The Open Days impinged very little on the running of the school but did add considerably to Mrs Morley’s workload so I thank her for that. I must also thank Mrs Drew, Mrs Graham and Mrs Chapman who gave generously of their time to ‘meet and greet’ our visitors.
I hope the sun shines and that you have a pleasant half term break.
With best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
R.H. Marshall

Princethorpe Tournament
The school football team took part in the annual Princethorpe College Tournament last Thursday.
We started off modestly- only drawing the first match v Provost Williams. However, we came back strongly to top the group with two 3-0 victories (v Arnold Lodge and Abbotsford).
This took us through to the semi-finals where we faced local rivals Bilton Junior, who had looked strong in their group matches. Despite Crescent having the better of the chances, the game ended in a 0-0 draw, which meant the match went straight into sudden death penalties. They missed…we scored - onto the final.
Bablake greeted us in the final and we took an early lead. This lead was held until the last second of the match (literally!) when Bablake equalized. Again it was penalties but we were not so lucky this time. A repeat of the Warwick Tournament- even down to our crucial penalty miss being kept out by the crossbar!
The boys did extremely well putting 100% effort in and cannot be disappointed, as they could have done no more. Goalscorers were: Joe Miller 3, Tomas Marshall 2, Dominic Bolton and Jack Fisher (Joe Phillips scored penalties in both shoot-outs).
Thank you to all the parents and grandparents that gave such great support.

Boys’ Football 13th October, 2007
Saturday saw us all gather at Dunchurch School for the next exciting chapter in Crescent’s football journey of 2007-08!
We were a tough group but began with high expectations of our chances. The opening two fixtures resulted in hard fought draws, leaving us needing a win to qualify for the semi-finals.
We upped the quality of the performance to do this 5-0 The tense semi-final match moved into extra time with us coming through 3-1 and so to another final!
Try as we might in an extremely tight game we just could not break through Binley Woods’ defence, nor could they ours, and so one more to penalties!
After high drama, and some confusion, Crescent eventually emerged victorious in sudden death.
The boys showed just how far teamwork and determination can take you and received just reward for all of their efforts in recent weeks.

A big thank you is due to every one who came on Friday night for the quiz, with six teams taking part. A great time was had by all.
Mr Marshall’s team were unable to defend their title and new very worthy champions were crowned. Next year could see a clash of Titans! Also big thanks are due to Steve Brown who was our excellent Quizmaster for the evening. Thank you also to my husband, Simon, for helping with the marking and organisation.
The results were as follows:
Pagan Dog 134
Allez Les Blancs 115
Dazed & Confused 104
7 Dwarfs Minus One 100
Here in Body But Not In Mind 78
Fantastic Five 76
‘Pagan Dog’ also won the ‘Shakespeare’s Plays’ round and collected 6 tickets kindly donated by Rugby Theatre. ‘7 Dwarfs Minus One’ won the ‘Best Feast’.
‘Market Day’ which was also held on Friday made £101.55.
Well done to Classes III and IV.
We are putting the finishing touches to the Indulgence Evening on Thursday, 15th November. Please let your Class Rep know that you are coming and how many friends and family you will be bringing as we need to know how many glasses of wine to lay on and so the various stall holders bring enough stock.
