Issue No 418

Dear Friends of Crescent
The FoC formally started ten years ago this week – Happy Birthday FoC! From the original committee only Miss Wren remains and she continues to give loyal and sterling service. My thanks to her and all who have served on the committee over the past ten years – your hard work is much appreciated and has enhanced the children’s time in school.
Times Tables Challenge
Congratulations are due this week to Jack Fisher, Joe Miller and Akash Parmar for successfully completing the Golden Challenge and to Sara Brown, Millie Byrne, Jayveer Grewal and Daniel Marshall for successfully completing the Diamond Challenge.
Anti-Bullying Week
Next week is anti-bullying week during which the Anti-Bullying Alliance shines a light on bullying, sending a clear and positive message that bullying is neither acceptable nor inevitable. This year’s theme is bullying in the wider community, with the slogan ‘Safer together, safer wherever’ reminding us that we all have a role to play in keeping children (and adults) safe wherever they are.
The ABA has a website whose address is: www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk.
The following are excerpts from the Parent Information Booklet that are relevant to this subject:
Advice to Pupils
Pupils are advised to seek help when necessary, when they are experiencing difficulties or when they are aware that other children are
experiencing difficulties. It is best that this help is sought at the earliest possible opportunity.
· Talk to a supervisor or teacher
· Talk to class teacher or other responsible person you trust
· Talk to parents. The parent should then contact the class teacher at the earliest opportunity.
Behavioural Difficulties
If a child’s behaviour is having an adverse effect on those around him or her this will be pointed out to the child who will then be given the opportunity to discuss the behaviour, its causes and its repercussions. If the behaviour is causing other children to become unhappy it will not be tolerated. In such circumstances we do not seek to apportion blame but rather to seek out the cause of the behaviour and work with all parties to affect a cure.
Bullying
If a child believes that s/he is being bullied we will take the following action:
The ‘victim’ will be listened to, his/her concerns taken seriously, and other modes of reacting may be suggested.
We will speak to the child accused of bullying about the situation. The child will be told how their behaviour is being interpreted by the ‘victim’ and asked to amend their behaviour if appropriate. No blame will be attached at this stage.
A greater staff presence will be maintained at those places and times when the ‘victim’ feels most threatened. Parents will be informed.
The ‘victim’ will be given access to a member of staff of their choice (including the Headmaster) whenever the bullying threatens to reoccur.
I prefer to avoid the use of the term ‘bullying’ in the first instance because it has become such an emotive one. However, once a child has been informed that their behaviour is causing another child to be unhappy it is likely that a repetition of that behaviour will be described as bullying and will be dealt with severely.
Happily incidents of bullying at Crescent have been few and far between and, where all parties have co-operated fully, have been resolved with lessons learnt on all sides.
With best wishes
Yours sincerely
R.H. Marshall

Match Reports
Football v Dunchurch
Crescent marched on to the quarter finals of the Rugby School’s Cup Competition after beating Dunchurch 2-1 on Wednesday at home.
Crescent did have to battle, though, as Dunchurch proved to be very strong and skilful in attack. The early exchanges were pretty even until Joe Miller broke through the middle with a strong run and slotted home the opening goal. Crescent grew in confidence and began to play some impressive football. This pressure eventually told as a pinpoint cross by Joe Miller was met with a neat header by Tomas Marshall to double the lead.
Dunchurch got themselves back into the match when a well worked free kick was turned goal-wards and found the net despite Joe Phillips’ best efforts. Both teams created good chances to score and Oliver Howes was called into duty on more than one occasion. Backed up by some excellent, committed defending, Crescent held on to the lead and came away with the victory.

Netball v Dunchurch
On Wednesday our netball team played Dunchurch.
After a keenly contested first half Dunchurch proved themselves to be sharper and more determined than us in the second half.
Dunchurch won 5-3.

“FOC” News
Christmas Bazaar
The Christmas Bazaar is on Friday, 7th December at 3.45pm in the school hall. It will be purely for the children, with our usual visit from Father Christmas, a selection of children’s games, tombola, Guide Dogs for the Blind, cake stall, refreshments and other attractions.
There is a raffle ‘Wish List’ on the wall opposite the FOC notice board. It would be great if everyone could each donate a single item from the list so that we can make up themed gift boxes as prizes for the raffle. Denise Cook and Catherine Drew go to considerable lengths to plan and put together the list and package the prizes to look spectacular and make them really worth winning. I thank them for this.
Christmas Bazaar raffle tickets should be in your child’s bag very soon. Please support us by selling as many as you can and returning the counterfoils to school via your child’s class teacher. We will be using the same system as before and if you can sell more they will be available in one of the pockets next to the FOC notice board by the side door.
I need to ask more of your generosity, as we also need tombola prizes for the children. We need sealed containers (jars or boxes) with a gift of value 50p to £2 maximum inside.
There is a box for any donations just inside the side entrance to the school.
Booking slips for Father Christmas will be in next week’s newsletter.

Chairman.
