Dear Friends of Crescent,

Times Tables Challenge

The times tables challenge has become a very popular activity this term and a significant number of children have clearly been up for the challenge.  I wrote about a handful of successful children a few weeks ago – I can now bring you up to date with the others.  Many congratulations to:

Emily Cheadle, Hannah Cooper, Flora Courtney, Eloise Sutton, Georgie Colbourne and Jack Fisher for meeting the Golden Challenge.

Maria Deery, Leenah Abu el Gasim, Jessica Armbrister, Joe Miller and Daisy Van der Post for meeting the Golden and Diamond Challenges.

Hannah Allroggen, Sara Brown, Hattie Byrne, Dominic Bolton, Hiba Abu el Gasim, Josie Brazier, Millie Byrne, Jayveer Grewal, Julia Hope, Daniel Marshall and Akash Parmar for meeting the Golden, Diamond and Platinum Challenges.

LAMDA Exam Success

On Thursday and Friday of last week a large group of children took their London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art exams in Speech and Drama.  Some of the results are made known on the day of the exams and so I am pleased to be able to congratulate the following children on their success:

Introductory Level

Charlotte Ecclestone passed with Merit

India Green passed with Distinction

Sophie Howes passed with Distinction

George Longmore passed with Merit

Arun Mistry passed with Merit.

Preliminary Level

Hannah Allroggen passed with Merit

Abigail Bolton passed with Distinction

Hattie Byrne passed with Distinction

Emily Cheadle passed with Merit

Amy Cook passed with Merit

Maria Deery passed with Merit

Stephanie Drew passed with Merit

William Hedderwick passed with Distinction

Isobel Johnson passed with Merit

Sabrina Pagliarini passed with Distinction

It is a terrific achievement that all the children passed with either Merit or Distinction but, if you saw what I see you wouldn’t be surprised.  Mrs Ovens simply won’t leave the children alone until they have practised enough to get a high mark.  She is prepared to work with them every day if necessary so I thank her both as a parent and Headmaster!

Coventry Festival of Speech and Drama

Once again we had a number of children taking part in this annual festival and they all did very well indeed.  This year was the first occasion that The Crescent Shield for Humorous Verse was presented and, fittingly, the first winner was a Crescent School pupil -  Francesca Brown.  Francesca also won first prize with Florence Chapman for Group Verse Speaking.  Florence also won first prize in the Poetry Writing Class.  Many congratulations to them both and to Sophie Howes, Oliver Howes and William Hedderwick who also took part and did themselves proud.

Crossing the Road

I have recently been asked, by the local authority, to comment on their proposal to make the street of Magnet Lane adjacent to Bilton Infants School one way with traffic humps.  I will do so but will also point out to them that many children from a variety of schools need to cross Bawnmore Road near our school.  I will be asking them to employ another ‘lollipop person’ as soon as possible.  This request is more likely to be successful if other people petition the appropriate people.  I am indebted to Mrs Richards for supplying me with the contact details of such a person.  The more people who write to this address the better I suspect.  The gentleman in question is: Mr G Dinn, Warwickshire County Council, Traffic Project Group, E & E Division, Shire Hall, PO Box 43, Warwick.  CV34 4SX.

Schoolstrader.com

I would like to encourage you to visit www.schoolstrader.com a unique website for independent school communities.  You may have seen the site covered in The Times, The Daily Telegraph, Country Life and The Spectator. Parents, staff, friends and family can use it to advertise to each other or search for items for sale (from holiday homes and bikes, to pets and musical instruments). The site has dedicated pages for most independent schools. It is useful, simple and completely free. Once registered, you can place ads or search for items under specific categories.

Communication between buyers and sellers is by email. Users may place ads on the Crescent School pages and on other local independent school pages in our area. Ads may also be placed regionally or nationally free of charge across the Schoolstrader network (from Scotland to Devon).

Please pay the site a visit.

With best wishes

Yours sincerely

Match Report

Football A and B match v Twycross

This match was particularly sentimental for me as it was against my previous school.  It also provided a tough test for both A and B sides.

The ‘A’ team needed to be at their best to get anything out of this game and rose to the challenge.  The pitch provided plenty of room and pleasing football was played by both sides. It was Twycross who gained the advantage after a defensive error provided a one on one which was duly taken.  Crescent fought hard to get back into the match and scored a scrappy goal after some delightful build up.  Jack Cornes notched up his first goal for Crescent after being given a few bites at the cherry. Both teams could have won the game after that but a draw seemed a fair result. (As well as being politically correct!)

The ‘B’ team showed as much fight but were beaten by a better side.  Crescent kept their shape, worked as a team and showed some good individual skills. They just lacked that sharpness which will come in time. George Whalley broke up countless attacks in his first appearance for Crescent and Alex Pearson was very strong in midfield.  At half time, Crescent were a respectable 2-0 down.  In the second half, tired legs meant that, despite some good saves by Jack Davenport, Crescent began to leak goals and finished up losing 7-0.

Nursery News

This term we are concentrating on sounds and letters which teaches the children how the alphabet works for reading and spelling.  We provide daily speaking and listening activities that are well matched to the children’s developing abilities and interests, drawing upon observations and assessments to plan for progression and to identify children who need additional support.  Our rich and varied environment will support children’s language learning.

Next term, the children who are going into the Reception Class in September 2008 will be given phonics books containing letters to learn.  I would be grateful for parental support as the children benefit from plenty of praise and encouragement whilst learning.  More information to follow.

As you are aware Christmas is fast approaching and if you have any unused or unwanted decorations, I would be grateful if you could donate them to the Nursery.  Thank you for your continued support.

Holiday Club dates:

Friday, 14th December 12.00 – 17.45 and Monday, 17th to Friday, 21st December 08.00 – 17.45.

Please collect booking forms from Nursery and return with full payment by Thursday, 13th December.

Thank you.

Friends of the Crescent News

The Bazaar is just one week away, can I please ask if you have not already looked at the notice board in the side entrance (opposite the FOC board) to check now to see if there are any last minute raffle prizes you can donate.  Whilst you are there, there is a blue box for your tombola donations (some small items in a bag, jar or box ranging from 50p - £2.00) if everyone brings just one item that should give us over 100 tombola prizes.

This year we are planning to have a cake stall so I would be very grateful if all the

Mrs Beetons or Nigellas amongst us could contribute or any Gordon Ramseys or

Jamie Olivers for that matter.

We will also be opening the kitchen hatch for refreshments.  There will be squash and a biscuit for the children and tea/ coffee and mince pie for the adults.

Santa will also be popping by and will be seeing children (strictly by appointment only, please consult the FOC notice board if you have not already got a slip).

A huge amount of time and effort goes into organising this event, the making of posters, decorating the grotto, purchasing and organising prizes and presents,  counting floats and takings, banking, arranging the hall on the day and clearing away.  This not only involves the members of the FOC but the Kitchen staff, caretakers, teachers and after school carers.  Primarily this event is for the enjoyment of the children but we also hope to raise some funds to put towards projects in the school. In order for this event to have maximum success and a real community feel we need your children and you to come along and have fun because that is what makes all our effort worthwhile.
