Dear Friends of Crescent,

Senior School Entrance Exam Success

Top billing this week goes to Abbie Sheppard of Class VI.  Abbie took the entrance tests for Kingsley School on Monday and on Tuesday morning the Headmistress rang Abbie’s mum to offer her a place – Kingsley must be very keen for Abbie to join them!  Our congratulations go to Abbie who has done really well since she joined us last October; she has fitted in so well it’s hard to believe she has been with us for such a short time.

School Secretary

On Thursday we were delighted to welcome our new school secretary for her first day at work.

Mrs Margrett has previously worked in a similar role at Bishop Wulstan and impressed us greatly at interview so we are confident that this will be the start of a long and happy relationship.  I am sure all the school community will make her feel very welcome.

Open Days

As you know, we are again holding Open Days for prospective parents on Friday, 7th and Monday,

10th March.  If you know anybody with children under the age of 11 who want the best possible start in life for their child and haven’t visited us previously do, please, encourage them to come on one of those days.  No appointment is necessary and they would be shown around by children.  The Friday is the day on which we dress up as book characters and I am having trouble deciding which character I should come as given that it is an Open Day – the ‘demon headmaster’, Mr. Chips, Severus Snape – perhaps I should turn it into a competition!

Coughs and Colds

With many children suffering from coughs and colds some benefit from the use of ‘over the counter’ medicines.  Can I remind parents that children are not allowed to have medicines of any kind in their possession in school?  This is to prevent the possibility of a child taking too much or sharing with a friend who then suffers an allergic reaction.  Class teachers can administer such things if the appropriate permission slip has been completed.

With best wishes

Yours sincerely

R.H. Marshall

Please note:

Friday, 14th March

After School Club will join in the Friends of Crescent activity.  Please would parents supply their children with £2 so that they can join in happily.

Thank you.

Tescos Computers for Schools

On the 3rd of March Tescos are opening their "Computers for Schools" scheme.  Last year we collected in excess of 9,000 which bought a considerable quantity of software used across the school.  It would be wonderful if we could match that success this year, the Wind Turbine is only 5,000!

Thank you.

World Book Day

World Book Day is on the 6th March to celebrate this each child is to receive a £1 book token that can be spent in any book shop and even at our book fair.

Friday 7th March

As a school we like to celebrate World Book Day in our own special way: coming to school dressed as a character from a book, we will do this on Friday 7th March.  Please consider that the costumes should be practical and warm for a school day.  I am very much looking forward to seeing the wide variety of characters.

Book fair

We have a book fair running from the 5th March to the 10th march from 3:30 in the library.  Please come and spend your World Book Day token.  The school receives 100% commission on all books that are bought.

Up for reading

'Up for reading' is how we are going to raise money for this term's charity: The Down Syndrome Educational Trust.

Each child is bringing home a sponsor form, they are to try and get sponsorship for reading each day.  There will be no formal homework this week but each child is to use this time by committing to more reading.  It would be lovely if each child could bring in some money for this privilege and to support this worthwhile charity.

Please can all monies be in by the 14th March, cheques are to be made payable to The Down Syndrome Education Trust.

Match Results.

Last night Crescent netball teams from Years 5 and 6 played Eastlands School.  Eastlands have embraced the new rule that up to 2 boys can be part of a High Five netball team.  So the Crescent team had to get used to playing against boys.  The Year 6  Eastlands boy was indeed very good and was their pivotal player.  However, it was a closely contested match and Eastlands won 3-2.  Crescent only really scoring in last quarter through Millie Byrne.  The Year 5 team playing only their second match began steadily in control and then ran away with the scoring in the second half.  Crescent won 11-3.

Well played both teams.  Next week the first round of the Tournament is taking place on Wednesday 5th March and we are now playing at Henry Hinde.  The finals take place the following week and will be held at Crescent.  If any Mums would offer to help with teas and any non playing girls would like to help,

Mrs Gove would appreciate up to 6 helpers. Thank you.

Nursery News

This week we have had visits from P.C. Mick and Mr Furber.

Mr Furber, one of our governors, talked to the children about helping and caring for animals.   We also met “Cadbury” a chocolate Labrador and “Bendicks” a beautiful Persian cat.

P.C. Mick came to talk to the children about his job as a policeman and the children had a chance to wear some of his uniform.  P.C. Mick also talked about road safety and when it is safe to cross the road.

Thank you both for taking time out of your busy schedules to come and visit us.

On Friday, 7th March nursery children are invited to dress up as a book character for a day.

Finally, if you have any spare newspapers, we would be grateful if you would donate them to the nursery.

Thank you for your continued help and support.
