Dear Friends of Crescent,

Senior School Entrance Exam Success

Following on from the excellent news about the success of our Class VI children in the entrance tests to Rugby and Kingsley I can now bring you more excellent news.  Fourteen children took the entrance tests to Princethorpe and all fourteen were offered places straight away or on the waiting list.  Additionally five of the children have been awarded scholarships.

The results were as follows:

Millie Byrne and Freya Noyce – Allrounders Scholarship

Jack Fisher – Music Scholarship

Julia Hope and Max Thomson – Academic Scholarships

Josie Brazier, Jayveer Grewal, Evie Lowe, Alison McLean and Bethany Rees have been offered places and Lucy Chappell, Chloe Di Dato,

Hattie Hedderwick and Abi Sheppard have been offered places on the waiting list.

We have also heard that Hiba Abu El Gasim has been offered an English Scholarship to King Henry VIII School and Julia Hope has been offered a Music Scholarship to Bablake School.  Isobel Pagendam has been offered a place at King’s High School and Max Thomson a place at Warwick School.

This year’s results have been outstanding and reflect great credit on all concerned; eight children have shared 11 awards between them.  Many of the senior schools involved have made a particular point of telling me how keen they are to have Crescent School children join them.

Art Exhibition at Warwick School

This year, as in previous years, we were invited to display some of our children’s art work at an Exhibition at Warwick School.  I am always impressed by the standard and variety of artwork our children achieve at all levels of the school and this was exemplified by the work exhibited at Warwick.  The work was a mixture: three individual pieces by Julia Hope, Alex Fowkes and Jack Fisher and a combined effort by Class V.  It made me feel very proud to see how favourably the work our children produce compares with that of children from other Prep. Schools.

Parent Questionnaire

My thanks to those who have already returned their completed questionnaires.  Any not returned by today will still be read and will then be taken into account as we plan the way forward for the school.

With best wishes.

Yours sincerely,

R.H. Marshall

Match Reports

Football match v Crackley Hall (home)

Crescent played Crackley Hall with a mixture of A and B players due partly to the visitors’ request and partly to the clash with cross country.

The A team played Crackley Hall earlier in the year and won only 4-3 so Crescent were always going to be the underdogs.  So it proved in the first few minutes as the hosts were immediately put under pressure.  Himesh Parmar’s strong tackling kept them at bay for a short while but finally, with the defence isolated, the breakthrough came.  The second quickly followed when Crescent conceded a penalty (I won’t mention the culprit!) which was dispatched with ease. Daniel Marshall grew into the game in an unfamiliar centre midfield role and began to create chances and dominate in the tackle.  After Crackley’s third, Crescent managed to claw one back through the hard-working captain Jack Fisher.  Eventually, Crescent were 5-1 down at half time.  Like in the year 5’s match, the home side picked up in the second half and dominated large parts of the half but failed to finish. They did pull back another- again Jack Fisher- but lost another two on the break.

Final score, 7-2.

Year 5 Football Match v Twycross (home)

It was unfortunate that the year fives played Twycross in their first ever match together as it was probably the hardest match they would play.

Crescent started poorly and conceded from a corner in the first minute.  Panic then set in as the hosts were pinned back and desperately tried to stem the flow of attacks.  Despite Dominic Bolton’s continuous last ditch tackling, the goals came at a steady rate and Crescent were 4-0 down at half time.  In the second half, Crescent put on a much more disciplined performance and competed much better.  Fabrizio Pagliarini, in his first match for the school, looked amazingly comfortable holding the ball up for the midfielders (not his natural game); Joe Phillips looked the most likely to score and struck the bar on one occasion and Oliver Howes was strong and energetic in a rare outfield appearance.

Crescent only conceded one in the second half and can take great pleasure from a spirited performance (the opposite to the way England Rugby Team do it!).  This level of match will only improve them and any other matches will seem easy in comparison.

Indoor Cricket Tournament

Crescent were involved in an indoor cricket tournament just before the half term break.  It was an eight-a-side competition with four schools in a group. Crescent’s group included Coundon Primary, Finham Park Primary and Ernsford Grange Primary.

It was an interesting test for the boys as, with only three practice sessions at school and little experience apart from that, Crescent were always going to be underdogs, especially with some schools arriving wearing whites! They fielded in a very professional manner, though, with energy and good technique. However, this did not prevent them from losing the first two games.  Too many nerves meant that bowlers bowled too many wides and batters were afraid to run.  In the final game, Crescent were more relaxed and good running by Jack Fisher and Tomas Marshall and straight bowling by the whole team took the team through to a consolation victory.

All in all it was a positive experience for Crescent as they hit two fours (straight back past the bowler) which no other school managed (showing that they played proper cricket shots) and, if it were outside not being stopped by the nets, would have hit a lot more!

Cross Country Results.

Tuesday was a very busy night for the PE department, on top of our matches against Crackley Hall, we also had our determined cross country team tackling the second Trials Race at Abbots Farm.  The course was long, not very well marked out and very messy!  So all the runners were grateful to the [human] hare to follow.

Girls Results.

Millie Phillips 2nd

Harriet Hedderwick 18th

Hiba Abu el Gasim 26th

Josie Brazier 31st

Millie Byrne 44th

Boys Results.

Joe Miller 3rd

Joe Phillips 13th

Tomas Marshall 15th

Well done every one, a great school effort.  Next race is at Princethorpe [lots of hills here to cope with] on Thursday, 28th of February.

Netball Results.

We played Crackley Hall on a bitterly cold Tuesday.  I don’t think I’ve ever played a match in any colder conditions!  No one complained and the match was of an excellent standard.  This was a 7 a-side match and gave all the girls a chance to settle into some positive team work.  A closely contested match which was 2-2 at the end of ¾ time, so a tactical change of positions was needed by the Crescent team.  Freya took on the role of centre and we began to dominate play.  The final score was a win to Crescent 5-3.

Well persevered everyone, the tournament will be just as hard.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids

Sainsbury’s are now giving out school vouchers and we are collecting them.  It is called the ‘Active Kids’ campaign (AK08) and vouchers will be given out for every £10 spent (£5 for Sainsbury’s locals). They are also giving bonus vouchers for £10 spent on fresh fruit and vegetables. We are very grateful for all the vouchers that everyone collects and thank you in advance of these.
